Magic in the Earthsea universe is consists of numerous disciplines, like finding, weatherworking, changing, summoning, healing, patterning, naming, illusion and chanting. Magic works thanks to the True Runes Old Speech, which is a language of dragons and in which all objects have their true names. It is also usually required to perform a gesture or a movement to invoke a spell. According to mythopoesis of Earthsea, good wizards use magic only, when they are sure that it will not change the ballance, the equilibrium of the universe. Irrespectively, magic is very common in the Earthsea, wizards heal, control the weather (so called "weatherworkers") and do other things.
Magic is also used by some uneducated people, like withches, who know only some basics and are capable only of certain simple tasks, like controlling cattle, healing minor illnesses etc.
Magic is taught in the School of Magis on Roke Island.
